Electronic invoicing is set to become an integral part of the business environment in Slovakia over the coming years. It represents one of the most significant legislative changes in the field of VAT in recent times, fundamentally affecting the way invoices are issued, received, and processed.
From 1 January 2027, e-invoicing will become mandatory for domestic transactions between businesses, with voluntary adoption possible already in 2026. For many companies, this will not be merely a technical adjustment but a comprehensive change to internal processes, accounting, and tax reporting.
What is an e-Invoice and How Does It Differ from Current Practice?
An electronic invoice (e-invoice) is not a PDF sent by email or a scanned paper invoice.
It is a structured electronic file in XML format, containing all legally required invoice details and designed to be automatically processed by information systems.
In practice, this means:
-
no manual data entry,
-
significantly lower risk of errors,
-
automated reporting of selected data to the Financial Administration.
An e-invoice becomes data, not just a document.
Who is Subject to the E-Invoicing Obligation?
The obligation applies to business entities more broadly than many realize.
E-invoices must be received by all VAT taxpayers to whom an invoice must be issued, including:
-
legal entities,
-
self-employed individuals,
-
professionals (e.g., lawyers, notaries, architects, artists),
-
individual farmers,
-
entities leasing real estate.
Even businesses that are not VAT taxpayers must be able to receive e-invoices if issued in accordance with the law.
Implementation Timeline:
-
Voluntary phase – 2026
Companies can test the system, configure software, and adjust internal processes without penalties. -
Mandatory domestic e-invoicing – from 1 January 2027
VAT taxpayers will be required to:-
issue and receive invoices electronically,
-
electronically report selected data for domestic transactions.
-
-
Expansion to cross-border transactions – from 1 July 2030
From this date, e-invoicing will also be mandatory for:-
cross-border deliveries within the EU,
-
transactions with third countries.
-
At the same time, the current VAT control statement and recapitulative statement will be abolished, as data will be automatically reported to the Financial Administration.
Digital Postman: Key Component of the System:
E-invoices will be sent and received exclusively through a certified delivery service provider, known as the Digital Postman.
Responsibilities include:
-
secure delivery of the invoice to the recipient,
-
extraction of selected invoice data,
-
automatic reporting to the Financial Administration.
Companies select their own Digital Postman, and the Financial Administration will publish a list of certified providers.
Data Reporting and Company Responsibility:
Although the Digital Postman ensures technical reporting, the legal responsibility remains with the company—whether as supplier or recipient.
Penalties may apply in cases of:
-
failure to report data,
-
late reporting,
-
reporting incorrect data:
-
up to €10,000,
-
for repeated breaches, up to €100,000.
-
Proper configuration of processes and software is therefore critical.
Why Start Preparing Already in 2026?
Experience shows that companies delaying preparation until just before implementation face:
-
inconsistent processes,
-
increased errors,
-
unnecessary exposure to penalties.
Early preparation enables:
-
testing the compatibility of accounting systems,
-
defining responsibilities between company and accountant,
-
minimizing operational and tax risks.
Conclusion: E-Invoicing is More Than an IT Project
Electronic invoicing represents a strategic transformation, connecting:
-
taxation,
-
accounting,
-
internal processes,
-
management accountability.
Companies that treat e-invoicing solely as a technical legislative requirement risk operational and tax complications. Conversely, those approaching its implementation systematically, with expert support, can achieve significant efficiency gains in internal processes and better control over processed data.
